Sermon Text: Hebrews 4:11-13
The book of Hebrews is one of many New Testament letters. Yet with one defining characteristic that sets it apart from the others: it can be understood as a sermon waiting to be preached. And this sermon has one primary theme running through it - Jesus is better, which the preacher fleshes out in three main points: He speaks a better word, He establishes a better covenant, and He provides a better rest.
As we come to the end of the first point of the sermon(Jesus speaks a better word), we see that God has a heavenly rest in store for His people, and a reminder that just as there were Israelites who failed to enter the promised land, so there were will be some in the present community who will fail to enter the heavenly Eden. In these few verses, the reader is challenged by and called to come to terms with three truths. The first is the all-seeing sword that slays. Second, your weak estate. And third, the all-consuming call to strive.
